Umbria

Umbria

Umbria, blessed with fertile soil and a temperate climate, has been a hub for viticulture since the Etruscan times. The region, nestled between the protective mountain ranges, boasts a well-distributed annual rainfall, aiding in the production of excellent wines. The region saw a robust production of approximately 987,000 hl of wine in 2009, primarily white, derived from a variety of grapes including Trebbiano Tuscan, Grechetto, Malvasia long white, and Verdello, along with internationally recognized varieties like Chardonnay.
Traditionally associated with the well-known Orvieto DOC, shared with Lazio, Umbria has recently gained fame with two recognized DOCG red wines - Torgiano Rosso Riserva and Sagrantino di Montefalco. Torgiano Rosso Riserva is primarily produced from Sangiovese, while Sagrantino di Montefalco is derived from the native Sagrantino, characterized by its tannins. The Sagrantino di Montefalco is also available in the Passito version, a dessert wine with unique personality and untapped potential. Other grape varieties cultivated in Umbria, enhancing the average quality level, include Montepulciano, cherry, barbera, merlot, gamay, and alicante.

Region Umbria
Country Italy
Climate and soil Umbria, nestled within mountain ranges, does not experience maritime influences. The region's climate is predominantly continental, characterized by cold winters and hot summers. Rainfall is generous, particularly near the Apennine chains. Often, the smaller flat areas and hollows experience sultry air in the summer due to a lack of wind. Despite these factors, Umbria enjoys a favorable climate, thanks to its lush vegetation.
Notably, Umbria is the only region in Italy that is entirely landlocked. Its landscape is majorly hilly, making it the most hilly region in Italy, which contributes significantly to its unique soil profile.
