History

The history of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG dates back to the ancient times, with the Sagrantino grape variety believed to have been cultivated in Umbria for more than 400 years. It was traditionally used to produce a sweet passito style wine for religious ceremonies. However, in the 1970s, producers started to make a dry style wine which quickly gained recognition for its quality and uniqueness. In 1992, it was awarded the DOCG status.

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is produced in the region of Umbria, specifically in the hilltop town of Montefalco and its surrounding areas. The region has a unique microclimate characterized by cold, quite wet winters and hot, dry summers. The soil is predominantly clay and limestone, which contributes to the high-quality of the grapes. The vines are generally planted on hillside locations, benefiting from good sun exposure and excellent drainage.
