Marche

Marche, a region of diverse landscapes and vineyards, is home to a variety of unique grapes that contribute to the production of its distinguished wines. The region's prominent grape, Verdicchio, is the star in the acclaimed Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica wines, which are celebrated for their refined structure, elegance, and sophisticated aroma profiles. In 2009, Marche produced approximately 782,000 hl of wine, primarily white, reflecting the region's dedication to Verdicchio. However, the region is also gaining recognition for its red wines, particularly those produced from Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes. These varieties are used to create the Conero DOCG and Rosso Piceno Superiore, which are considered the region's finest red wines. Other notable red wines include the Pinot Noir from the Focara sub-area of the Pesli Hills and the exceptional Lacrima di Morro d'Alba DOC, a wine produced in a small area of the Ancona province. The region is also known for the unique Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG, a sparkling red or amber wine produced from the Vernaccia grape.

Climate and soil Marche's climate and soil greatly influence the quality and character of its wines. The Conero promontory significantly impacts the climate of the coastal areas, creating diverse weather patterns across the region. In the northern part of the region, cold winds from the north lead to harsh winters, while the southern area, protected by the mountain, experiences milder, rainier winters due to warm, humid winds from the south. The region experiences stark contrasts between the cold winters and hot summers, which contribute to the character and complexity of the grapes grown here. The soil in the region is varied, with areas of calcareous clay, limestone, and sand, all of which contribute to the unique characteristics of Marche's diverse range of wines.
