Abruzzo

Abruzzo, a picturesque region in Italy, is a haven for wine lovers and enthusiasts. The wine-producing region is renowned for its luscious grape varieties and large-scale wine production that significantly contributes to the regional economy. Over the years, Abruzzo has transitioned from being a primary source of musts and cut wines to a region producing some of Italy's finest wines. The key grape varieties grown in Abruzzo include Montepulciano and Trebbiano, which have given rise to impressive, aromatic, and well-structured wines. These wines have a unique character that sets them apart from the wines produced in the northern regions. The region's wine production maintains excellent standards, with approximately 2,652,000 hl of wine produced in 2009.
In terms of origin denomination, the wines are primarily produced in the highland areas of the Peligna valley, the eastern side of the Gran Sasso, and the Teramane hills. These areas provide the ideal environment for the growth and development of Montepulciano, Trebbiano Toscano, and Trebbiano Abruzzese grape varieties.

Climate and soil Abruzzo's climate varies across the region, with the coastline experiencing a mild Mediterranean climate due to the influence of the sea. This mild climate is ideal for grape cultivation and wine production. However, the inland areas of Abruzzo have a more continental climate, characterized by cold winters and extremely hot summers. The region receives abundant rainfall and snow from winter through spring, providing the vineyards with the much-needed hydration. However, the summers are typically dry, a feature that significantly impacts the vineyard's growth patterns and the quality of the grapes.
