Tokaj-Hegyalja

Tokaj-Hegyalja region, nestled in the northeastern corner of Hungary, is renowned for its unique wine production. This wine region harvests five principal grape varieties, namely Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Yellow Muscatel, with Furmint being the most prevalent. The landscape of Tokaj is exclusively dedicated to white wine production, yielding both dry and sweet varieties.
The dry wines, primarily based on Furmint, are characterized by their high acidity, mineral notes from the volcanic soil, and a spectrum of spicy aromas and flavors. In contrast, the sweet wines range in sugar content and acidity, providing a comprehensive wine tasting experience. The late-harvest sweet botrytis wines express a vibrant fruity character, while the noble wines reveal profound fragrances as they mature. The noble wines, classified by 'puttonyos', possess the potential for aging over decades.

Climate and soil The Tokaj-Hegyalja region experiences a pronounced continental climate, with severe winters counterbalanced by hot, dry summers. However, the region's elevated position and proximity to Lake Balaton render a refreshing influence. The area receives approximately 2000 hours of annual sunshine, with a typically prolonged and sunny autumn, favorable for botrytis formation.
The soil composition around Lake Balaton is dominated by slate, volcanic basalt, clay, and 'löss'. The expansive plains mainly consist of sandy soil, while the northeastern hills are characterized by volcanic rocks. Pécs region, in particular, exhibits a combination of volcanic soils interspersed with slate and sand.
