History The Vien de Nus grape traces its roots to the Valle d'Aosta region in Italy, specifically the town of Nus, during the 19th century. This grape variety is believed to have been bred from a selection of 'orious' grapes traditionally grown in the Nus area.
Despite its historical cultivation in the region, the Vien de Nus has largely remained a local varietal, maintained by a handful of devoted vintners committed to preserving the unique character and heritage of this grape.
Ampelographic features The Vien de Nus grape vine features large, five-lobed leaves with a lyre-shaped petiole. The leaf surface exhibits a matte texture with ribs that are prominent and green. The teeth of the leaves are irregular and not very sharp.
The grape clusters are medium to large in size, typically 20 to 25 cm long, with a conical-pyramidal shape. The grapes themselves are larger than average, spheroid to slightly discoid in shape, with a distinct black color that has blue reflections. The skin is thick with a juicy, slightly rosy pulp.
Characteristics of the wine Wine produced from the Vien de Nus grape exhibits a rich, ruby-red color with hints of purple. On the palate, it delivers a dry and soft flavor profile with vinous qualities. It's a well-rounded wine that while providing a simple taste, is far from bland, offering a unique experience that reflects the terroir of the Valle d'Aosta region.
