History The Verdeca grape variety, predominantly cultivated in the southern regions of Italy, traces its roots back to the era of Greek colonization in Italy's Magna Grecia. While the exact origin of the grape is unclear, it shares noticeable similarities with the Portuguese Alvarinho grape variety.
Over the years, the cultivation of this grape variety has decreased, but it has maintained its presence in the Puglia region, contributing to the unique blends of local white wines.
Ampelographic features The Verdeca grapevine exhibits medium to large leaves which are orbicular and three to five-lobed. The upper surface is glabrous, dark green, and opaque while the underside is of a lighter green shade. The ribs initially show a red-vinous color, fading to light green over time.
The grapes of the Verdeca vine are of a slightly oval spheroid shape, medium in size with a prominent navel. The skin is thin, tender, and of a whitish-green color, while the pulp is juicy with a neutral flavor.
Characteristics of the wine The wine produced from the Verdeca grape variety is characterized by a straw yellow color with subtle greenish reflections. It offers a fruity and citrusy palate, making it a refreshing choice for wine enthusiasts. The flavor profile is further enhanced with hints of almond and white flowers, offering a complex yet balanced taste.
