History Traminer Aromatico, often simply referred to as Traminer, boasts a rich history that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The first recorded mention of this grape variety was in a German document dated around the 7th century, which referred to it as 'Uvae atrae traminae cognominatae'.
The grape later reappeared in historical records from 1150, and again in 1592, when it was located in the Palatinate region. Despite some confusion over the grape’s exact place of origin, it is widely accepted that Traminer Aromatico, like its close relative Gewurztraminer, originated in the village of Tramin in South Tyrol, Italy.
Over the centuries, the grape has journeyed across Europe and beyond, finding a home in regions as far afield as Alsace and California. Traminer Aromatico has been confirmed to be a descendant of wild vines from the Rhineland, and is thought to have been interbred with the Heunisch grape to create other well-known varieties.
Ampelographic features Traminer Aromatico has distinct ampelographic features that set it apart from other grape varieties. The leaves are small and pentagonal in shape, sometimes exhibiting three or five lobes. The leaf surface is dark green and glabrous, while the underside is a grey-green color.
The bunches of Traminer Aromatico are small, compact, and sometimes wedged with one or two wings. The berries are medium-sized, spherical, and slightly elongated, with a thick, persistent skin that is pruinose and amber-pink in color. The flesh of the grape is fleshy and has a unique aromatic flavor.
Characteristics of the wine The wine produced from Traminer Aromatico is typically a vibrant straw yellow color with hints of green and gold. The aroma is the wine's standout feature, exhibiting an intense, aromatic bouquet of yellow pulp fruit, exotic fruit, rose and acacia flowers, and hints of herbs.
The flavor profile of Traminer Aromatico wine is well-balanced, with a harmonious blend of soft and fresh notes. The wine has a good structure and a significant aromatic persistence, with undertones of bitter almonds often detectable on the palate.
