Grape variety Petit Manseng
Grape colour White grape
History Petit Manseng, a unique grape variety, traces its roots back to the Jurançon region in Southwest France, nestled near the majestic Pyrenees mountains, within the Basque region. It is believed to have evolved from the more robust Gros Manseng grape variety. Known for its small, thick-skinned berries, Petit Manseng produces a limited but concentrated must. Traditionally, its bunches undergo 'passerillage', a method of drying on the vine, achieved by removing the leaves and letting the autumn sun naturally sweeten the grapes. This grape variety is primarily used for crafting exquisite, sweet dessert wines.
The rise in popularity of Petit Manseng has seen its cultivation spread to other wine regions worldwide, including North and South America, and Australia.
Ampelographic features Petit Manseng vine leaves are medium-sized with a flat surface and revolving lobes. The top of the leaf displays a slightly brittle texture and a pure green hue. The underside is crimson and arachnoid along the ribs and flap. The petiole is red, and the ribs are green or partially red on both sides.
The bunches are small to medium-sized and moderately compact, with a visible, semi-woody peduncle. The spine of the axis is non-colored.
Petit Manseng grapes are uniformly colored, spheroidal in shape, and of medium size. They have a regular cross-section, colorless juice, and a medium-thick skin. The flesh is juicy with a simple flavor. The pedicel is medium-long and green, with prominent lenticels. The brush is short and not colored, and the pedicel separates easily from the berry.
Characteristics of the wine Wines produced from Petit Manseng are notable for their vibrant straw-yellow hue, loaded with intense fruity and spicy notes, complemented by subtle mineral undertones. On the palate, these wines exhibit a refreshing acidity, savory profile, and a well-structured body, culminating in a fruity finish. These characteristics make Petit Manseng wines particularly suited for pairing with a variety of foods and an excellent choice for those seeking a unique wine experience.
