History The Pecorello grape has a long history in the regions of Cosenza and Catanzaro, where it is often referred to as Pecorino. However, despite the shared name, this grape variety is quite distinct from the Pecorino grape found in Central Italy.
Records of Pecorello date back to the late 19th century, indicating that it has been a staple in local viticulture for well over a century.
Ampelographic features The Pecorello grape is characterized by its medium to large, orbicular leaves, which can be either trilobated or whole. The leaf is slightly bulky, with a flat or wavy contour and an open U or V petiole breast.
The bunches of this grape are medium in size, with a cylindrical or conical shape. They may be simple or winged and are slightly spatulate.
The berries are small to medium in size, spheroidal in shape, and covered in a thick, blue-violet skin.
Characteristics of the wine The Pecorello grape produces a ruby red wine with hints of violet. The wine is known for its intense aromas and a full, tannic flavor that leaves a lasting impression on the palate.
