History Neretto, often referred to as Neretto di Bairo or Neretto di San Giorgio, is a grape variety that has been cultivated for generations in the Canavese region, although its exact origins remain a mystery. Despite the challenges posed by its low yields and demanding cultivation requirements, Neretto has persevered in this area thanks to its ability to produce high-quality grapes. These grapes can create a less acidic, more balanced wine compared to the Barbera variety grown in the same region.
Ampelographic features The Neretto grapevine exhibits characteristic features such as a medium-sized, pentagonal leaf with pronounced lobes and a U-shaped petiole sinus. The upper leaf surface is smooth and hairless, while the lower is shiny. The leaf margin is marked by medium and small teeth in an irregular, convex pattern. The bunch is medium in size, with a conical pyramidal shape, winged and moderately compact. The grapes are medium-sized, with a skin that leans towards a rich blue color and juicy flesh offering a simple flavor.
Characteristics of the wine Wine made from the Neretto grape variety has a deep ruby red color with an intense aroma. The wine is warm and full-bodied on the palate, reflecting the high quality of the Neretto grapes.
