History The Mammolo grape has a rich history in the central regions of Italy, although it is not commonly found. Its unique name is believed to be derived from the distinctive violet fragrance that defines the wine produced from it. Notably, it is authorized for use in Chianti, and in certain instances, it contributes to the crafting of the esteemed Nobile Wine of Montepulciano.
The grape's presence in historical records and Italian viticulture adds to its charm and the wine's overall allure.
Ampelographic features The Mammolo grape exhibits unique ampelographic features. Its leaf is almost orbicular, medium-sized, and trilobate or pentalobate, with a closed petiolar sinus. The surface of the leaf is smooth, and its color can range from bottle-green to dark green. The grape cluster is medium-sized, semicircular, and has a visible, herbaceous peduncle.
The grape itself is medium to large, almost discoid in shape, and has a very pruinose purple, often reddish, medium-thick skin. The flesh is fleshy with a taste characteristic of 'mammul'. The pedicels are of a medium size and reddish color. The brush is also medium-long and reddish.
Characteristics of the wine Wine made from the Mammolo grape variety possesses a ruby red hue. It offers an intense, floral sensation on the palate, making it a delightful choice for wine enthusiasts seeking a distinct and satisfying tasting experience.
