History Originating in the cool, lush region of Galicia, Spain, the Brancellao grape has a deep history extending back to the Roman times. It's a grape variety that has seen its share of challenges, including the devastating phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century which severely reduced its cultivation.
Despite these challenges, Brancellao has managed to survive and is now enjoying a resurgence as part of the unique and expressive wines coming out of Spain's northwestern corner.
Ampelographic features The Brancellao vine is recognized for its medium-sized, compact clusters of small, round berries. The skin of the grape is thick and dark blue-black in color. The vines bud late in the spring, helping to avoid frost damage, and they are also resistant to diseases like mildew.
Characteristics of the wine Wines made from the Brancellao grape are noted for their fine, elegant structure and bright, lively acidity. They're typically medium-bodied with flavors of red fruit, especially cherry and raspberry, alongside floral and earthy notes. These wines also commonly exhibit a distinct minerality, reflective of Galicia's granite-rich soils.
