History Abbuoto, known for its dark berries, traces its roots back to ancient times. Its highly celebrated wine, Cécubo, was often hailed in Horace's writings. Historical references suggest that it was grown predominantly in the hilly regions of Fondi municipality (LT). It was also identified as an Italian vine in the comprehensive works of Viala and Vermorel (1909).
The Abbuoto grape has withstood the test of time, fascinating wine enthusiasts with its rich history and distinct characteristics.
Ampelographic features Leaf: Characterized by a relatively large, pentagonal, five-lobed shape. The pectoral sinus is open U-shaped. The upper side sinus is elliptical in shape, generally closed or semi-closed, and moderately deep. The lower lateral sinuses are elliptical and often semi-cut, deep. The leaf's upper surface is smooth, green, and slightly bubbled, while the lower surface is smooth. The lobes of the leaf are curled and irregular, with the central lobe having a blunt top, while the lateral lobes have pointed tops. The primary veins on the underside are green, occasionally with a pinkish hue, and are smooth.
Bunch: The bunches are almost large, shaped cylindrically-conical, occasionally with one or two wings, semi-compact, and not prone to shedding. The stalk is medium in length and thickness, semi-woody.
Berry: The berries are almost large, sub-round, and have a smooth cross-section. The skin is almost thick, consistent, black-purple, and slightly dusty. The very noticeable navel and the soft, slightly coloured juice have a neutral taste. The pedicel is of medium length and thickness, with a greenish-yellow hue, slightly tinged with pink. The berry separates from the pedicel easily.
Characteristics of the wine Abbuoto produces wines of remarkable depth and richness. The resulting wine typically has a full-bodied texture, with a balance of acidity and tannins that lend a certain complexity. The wine often exhibits a dark ruby color, with notes of dark fruits like blackberries and plums, and a hint of spice. The finish is long-lasting, making the wine from this grape variety a memorable experience.
